Since FY2020, the Diplomatic Archives received the original documents of post-WWⅡ international conventions involving Japan. Here we are exhibiting the Security Treaty between Japan and the United States of America (former Japan-US Security Treaty) along with related historical materials. The original document of the treaty was transferred to the Diplomatic Archives in September of 2021, and it was signed between Japan and the United States on September 8, 1951. The signatures were added on the very afternoon that the San Francisco Peace Treaty was also signed. Subsequently, in 1960, the treaty was revised, yet the close relationship it fostered between Japan and the United States continues to be a cornerstone of Japan's diplomacy and security although security environment surrounding Japan has gone through drastic changes. |
