On September 27, 1940, Saburo Kurusu, Japanese Ambassador to Germany, German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, and Italian Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano signed a trilateral military alliance treaty in Berlin, Germany, thereby concluding the Tripartite Alliance between Japan, Germany, and Italy. |
- Document 1 is issue No. 137 of Shashin Shuho, which was published on October 9, 1940. This issue covers the conclusion of the Tripartite Alliance between Japan, Germany, and Italy. It contains photographs of the signing of the treaty in Berlin, and of the German and Italian ambassadors to Japan, Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka,and Minister of the Army Hideki Tojo celebrating the conclusion of the alliance treaty in Japan (see the second image). In addition, the issue also explains the significance of the Tripartite Alliance, as well as the recent history of Japan’s two new allies (see the fourth to sixth images).
- Document 2 is issue No. 140 of Shashin Shuho, which was published on October 30, 1940. It contains a two-page spread highlighting the day on which the Tripartite Alliance was signed.
- Document 3 is issue No. 151 of Shashin Shuho, which was published on January 15, 1941. This issue features coverage of the exchange between girls in Japan, Germany, and Italy (see the cover and the third image).
