Before dawn on the 15 September 1894 the Japanese army surrounded Pyongyang, where the Chinese troops were concentrated, and launched an all-out attack. This was the first large-scale land engagement of the Sino-Japanese War. On the evening of the same day the Chinese forces surrendered and escaped the city. The Japanese army entered Pyongyang early the following morning. This print shows the fighting during the night.

  • Telegram sent on the evening of the 16 September 1894 by Lieutenant-General Nozu Michitsura, commanding the 5th Division which had carried out the attack on Pyongyang, to Imperial General Headquarters in Japan. It describes the fierce fighting from the previous day and how the Japanese army had completely occupied Pyongyang by dawn. It also gives details of the number of casualties.

It is also a rich source of additional information such as plans of troop movements before and during the battle, tables showing consumption of ammunition and food, and numbers of casualties.

Image 3 onwards shows Japanese translations of letters between commanders of individual Chinese units in Pyongyang such as Ma Yukun and Zuo Baogui and their overall commander Ye Zhichao and reveal that they were exchanging reports on the situation within the Chinese army, the movements of Japanese forces, etc.
