    On the 23 July 1894, with the aim of toppling the Korean government and establishing a new regime under the Daewongun, the Japanese army attacked the Gyeongbok Palace and engaged the palace garrison. In this image the Japanese Minister Plenipotentiary to Korea Ōtori Keisuke escorts the Daewongun to the Royal Palace while their guard of Japanese soldiers is involved in a shoot-out with Korean troops.

This is a telegram sent before dawn on 23 July 1894 to the Chief of General Staff in Japan by Major-General Ōshima Yoshimasa, commander of the mixed brigade charged with attacking the Korean royal palace. It informs him of the plan to surround the palace the following morning at the request of Ōtori Keisuke, Japan's Minister Plenipotentiary to Korea.

He states that since the Korean government's response to Japanese requests was unsatisfactory, Japanese troops have surrounded the palace and fighting has broken out with Korean forces.
