Thank you for reading the JACAR Newsletter.

On March 18, 2025, JACAR made the “Modern and Contemporary East Asian Records” collection from the Yamaguchi University Library available via its database. Coinciding with the addition, this edition of the JACAR Newsletter includes a contribution from Professor MATSUSHIGE Mitsuhiro from Nihon University’s College of Humanities and Sciences (a member of the JACAR Advisory Committee) that provides an overview of the collection and discusses its significance in the JACAR database.

This edition also looks at the First Sino-Japanese War, which ended 130 years ago. JACAR has hosted “The Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895: As Seen in Prints and Archives,” a joint online exhibition with the British Library, on its website since 2014. In this edition of the newsletter, we present an article that examines the war’s “hidden side”: an eye-opening exploration of conditions in Korea at the time.

In addition, we highlight the second installment in JACAR’s new series of short videos: “Reminisce – JACAR: Children from Japan and the U.S. Joined by Hachiko: Based on Diplomatic Papers from 90 Years Ago.” The newsletter article adds more layers to the new content, touching on materials beyond the documents that appear in the video.

Through the JACAR Newsletter, we will continue to offer information that helps our users further their historical research and enrich their knowledge. Thank you again for your support.
