Paper money is a fixture of everyday life. In Japan, bills feature renderings of key figures from the past, making the word “bill” almost synonymous with “portrait.” But who exactly are the persons whose faces appear on the country’s paper currency? With a new slate of Japanese banknotes debuting on July 3, 2024, this summer exhibition, showcasing items from the National Archives’ holdings and other collections, is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the history of modern Japanese bills and the persons whose likenesses have adorned them.

Site: 1st floor Exhibition Hall, Tokyo Main Office, National Archives of Japan

Supervision: Dr. Shizume Masato (Professor, Faculty of Political Science and Economics, School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University)
