The spring 2024 special exhibition focuses thematically on dreams, particularly those related to The Tale of Genji and its commentaries. It will showcase literature of the Heian era (794-1185). In Heian tales and waka poetry, dreams are depicted with mysterious powers, sometimes as divine messages, and at other times as communications from the deceased. Such notions reflect the beliefs and culture of Heian Japan, providing insight into the spiritual world of its aristocracy through readings. We hope you will enjoy our exhibition “A Casual Acquaintance with Heian Literature at the National Archives of Japan.” through the subject of dreams.
