To date, the materials that the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records (JACAR) makes available have been used for historical background research for audio-visual and other works, the animation movie, “In this Corner of the World” (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni), for example. The painter TSUE Taiyo is approaching the creation of his works using a novel style. He has been reading historical documents available at JACAR and forming the inspiration for his works in the process. He then uses delicate strokes to paint on the canvas scenes from former Manchuria that perhaps his great-grandfather saw as someone who went there as one of the agricultural pioneer settlers.
The 4th JACAR Online Seminar, “Using JACAR Documents for Historical Research: Examples in Painting by TSUE Taiyo,” was held on March 24, 2023. We invited TSUE for a crosstalk style online seminar, and he has previously been featured in our JACAR Newsletter No. 38 , issued on August 31, 2022.
A recording of the seminar is now available on our official YouTube channel.(Japanese only)Please check it out if you are interested in new ways to employ JACAR documents.
