The statue of Hachiko, the symbol of Shibuya Station, is loved around the world. Hachi, the Akita dog that served as the model for the statue, was born in Niida Village(present Odate City), Kita Akita County, Akita Prefecture, and died on a street in Shibuya on March 8, 1935. Hachiko was famous even before his passing, and his death was widely reported in domestic newspapers. Furthermore, it was also reported almost simultaneously across the ocean in the United States, where the death stirred up a reaction.
This video uses diplomatic papers and other materials from the “Prewar Diplomatic Records” collection to present episodes from 90 years ago of Japanese and U.S. children joined by Hachiko.
